Preserving More Than Affordable Housing

How I Saved Hours Of Time For POAH

The Director of Preservation For Affordable Housing (POAH) approached me with an interesting project. They had a video that was fairly well-recorded in terms of picture quality, but it was otherwise unusable because of bad wind noise. There was so much wind on that day of recording that the noise covered up the talent’s voice. (The word “talent” is used to describe the person on screen.) They non-profit hired me to salvage the video by cleaning up the audio. If I could do that, they also needed an edited video to act as a showcase for potential investors and other stakeholders.

Before we agreed on doing the project, I took a sample of the video and fixed the audio as best I could, without also destroying the voice audio in the process. I sent the director the edited sample with the optimized audio for her approval. She agreed that the sample was acceptable. We then discussed the next steps, which was to create a story board and edit the first draft. When I completed and sent that first draft, I asked if she wanted revisions. The director had me do another couple of drafts and finally it was done.

I particularly enjoyed working on this project because the director knew exactly what she wanted and we got along quite well. She had a way of being honest about whether she liked or did not like specific sections and how to edit them so that they were acceptable for her. It was my job to tell her if the changes were possible and to watch that we did not go over budget. I would report to her about any complications and estimate the amount of time the revision would take. We were quite efficient.
